Today we received a sable that needs an operation on the leg because it broke.
Age: Unknown
Gender: Male
Injury: Hind leg broken in need of a splint
He came in during the night and was stable in the container lying down for the whole night. The vet darted him so he can be sedated to be worked on. We picked him up onto the sail to carry him over to the bakkie where he can be worked on.
His horns need to be safely held and his tongue removed so he does not choke on it. His head needs to held upright so he does not drown in his own regurgitation and his hooves need to be held still as they kick really hard. He was given extra vitamins to give him a boost so his system does not crash and we checked his breathing throughout the operation.
They drilled a hole into the leg to put the splint in and created a cover with steel pipes that needed to be welded together.
During the operation everything had to be sterilized and the wound had to be kept clean with SOS and other sterilizing products.
